Free Guide: Essential Scripts for Self-Talk While Unmasking

Writer: Leigh Ann JohnsonLeigh Ann Johnson

I just completed a six-page document for my Sensory Empowerment Program and called it “Scripts for Communicating with Yourself” and I had to laugh, because I doubt a neurotypical person would call it that or make it that long! Yet here I am writing over 100 scripts to use in my own head! But let me explain! They are essentially scripts to use with yourself when you hear negative self-talk while unmasking.

It all started with creating a document of scripts for clients to use for communicating their sensory needs to others. This is a critical piece of the Sensory Empowerment Program, because so many of our challenges with meeting our sensory needs come when we are around other people. We’re taught our whole lives not to speak up in those situations and to prioritize the needs or wants of others. So a big part of my program is practicing putting our own comfort first and being open with others about what we need. This can be a large part of unmasking as an autistic adult.

While I was working on that scripts document, I realized that it’s not always other people holding us back - it’s often ourselves. So I decided to add scripts that reframe common negative self-talk that comes up for people who are working through the Sensory Empowerment Program. These scripts are even more exciting to me than the ones to use with other people! Before I knew it, I had 22 common negative self-talk phrases with 5-10 responses for each. So it became its own document! And I decided to share an abridged version with you that focuses on unmasking in general, because I want everyone to benefit from these scripts.

So here it is - a three-page version of my unmasking self-talk scripts for anyone to use. They will help you counter the negative voices that invade your head when going against the societal messaging to ignore your needs and hide your neurodivergent self. Unmasking can be a very challenging endeavor as an autistic adult and we often get in our own way while doing it. This document is full of empowering self-talk to use with yourself when feeling challenged by the process of getting in tune with your autistic needs and working to meet them. Use these scripts with yourself when that negative self-talk kicks in so that you can change it to positive, unmasked self-talk.
